Quadriceps strain

  1. Definition

It occurs when there is a partial or complete rupture of the muscle fibers in the quadriceps muscles, which are located at the front of the thigh. This type of injury is common in activities that involve explosive movements, sudden stops, or excessive stretching of the quadriceps muscles.

  2. Principal causes:

    • Sudden and sharp pain at the front of the thigh, often described as tearing or snapping.

    • Swelling or bruising around the injured area.

    • Weakness or inability to bear weight on the affected leg.

    • Difficulty bending the knee or extending the leg fully.

    • Muscle spasms or cramps in the quadriceps region.

  3. Our Treatment as a EvivaPHYSIO:

    • Physical examination to assess the extent of the injury.

    • Rest, ice, compression, and elevation to manage pain and swelling.

    • Medications like pain relievers to alleviate discomfort (if necessary)

    • Rehabilitation program consisting of stretching, strengthening, and functional exercises.

    • Physical therapy modalities such as ultrasound therapy and electrical stimulation.

    • Gradual return to activity under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Recovery from a quadriceps muscle tear may take several weeks to months, depending on the severity of the injury. It's crucial to follow the recommended treatment plan and avoid returning to strenuous activities too soon to prevent re-injury. Seeking prompt medical attention and adhering to rehabilitation protocols are essential for optimal recovery and minimizing long-term complications.
